Let’s just start by saying that being a weekend warrior and spending 48 hours in New York, the city that never sleeps, is not enough to see everything. It is, however, enough time to get a feel of the hustle and bustle of daily life in one of the world’s greatest cities. It is enough time to see many of the major highlights, that will leave you wanting more.
Day 1 as A Weekend Warrior in NEW YORK
The absolute best way to start your first day in New York is by having a bagel for breakfast, which is a very New York thing to do. Next, head towards Central Park, the city’s green lungs. Spend the morning strolling around, enjoying the contrast that the park provides to all the surrounding skyscrapers. Watch some street performers, sit down on a bench next to a picturesque lake or try to see all the sculptures and monuments in Central Park.
Central Park Zoo is a popular place to spend some time and the Strawberry Fields John Lennon memorial is always crowded with Beatles fans.
There is a nice restaurant in the middle of the park where you can have lunch. Another option is to buy a couple of hot-dogs from a food stall.
After lunch make your way through the park towards the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is located on the so-called Museum Mile on 5th Avenue. As the biggest museum in both North and South America, the Met will keep you occupied for a while. You pay as much as want to get in, but don’t forget to pick up a floor plan. The museum’s massive collections include paintings by Vermeer, Van Gogh, Monet and Rodin.
When you are museumed out, head down on famous 5th Avenue, which is lined by high-end fashion stores, such as Prada, Armani, Versace and Gucci. The enormous Apple store is also located on 5th Avenue, as are the Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center and the iconic Empire State Building.
In the early evening make your way to Broadway to catch a musical or play. Afterwards go for a New York dinner. Suggested places are the Hard Rock Café or Shake Shack.
End your first day on Times Square, gazing up in awe at all the flickering neon lights. It will feel like broad daylight.
Day 2 as A Weekend Warrior in New York City
Make sure not to skip breakfast, because your first activity on part two of your 48 hours in New York City will involve some walking. Take the subway to Brooklyn and walk back to Manhattan across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. The views of the Manhattan skyline from the bridge are breathtaking and arguably the most scenic in the entire city. The Brooklyn Bridge ends a short distance south of Chinatown and Little Italy, so you will have a vast number of options for lunch.
In the afternoon, go to the Staten Island Ferry terminal at the southernmost point of Manhattan. This ferry travels between Manhattan and Staten Island every half hour and is completely free. It runs right past the Statue of Liberty and offers nice views of the skyline of Lower Manhattan. No need to pay for cruises to Lady Liberty; take this free boat instead.
After your roundtrip there will be lots of time left to explore New York City’s financial district, also known as Wall Street. Another site you definitely should not skip is the new World Trade Center and the 9/11 memorial.
Depending on what you had for lunch – Italian or Chinese – have the other for dinner in the evening. You really can’t go wrong. Finish off your 48 hours in New York with a couple of cocktails in one of the rooftop bars around Times Square.
